A psychotherapist and international humanitarian, Dr. Gathers has worked tirelessly to improve lives-whether through global nonprofits like Médecins Sans Frontières or local agencies securing funding for critical community programs. Dr. Gathers currently works for Research Triangle Institute International (RTI).From championing public service as Greensboro AAUW Public Policy Chair and serving on the Guilford County Planning Commission Board, to mentoring and supporting community-building initiatives through Junior League of Greensboro, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., she has proven that leadership is about listening, lifting others, and taking action. Now, Dr. Gathers is ready to lead Greensboro with a focus on equity, empowerment, and tangible change. Her Commitment to Greensboro
Dr. Gathers is committed to reducing violent crime by 50% through smarter, community-centered policing, expanded neighborhood patrols, and robust crisis response teams. Because true safety means justice, trust, and proactive care for every resident.
Dr. LaToya B. Gathers supports smart tax policy that funds real progress—not performative politics. She backs targeted property tax reforms, performance-based business incentives, and creative revenue tools like short-term rental taxes and vacancy penalties.
She strongly supports a $25/hour living wage, believing fair employment is essential for a thriving community. By removing barriers to investment and promoting small business innovation, Dr. Gathers is building a resilient local economy rooted in dignity, opportunity, and growth.
For over fifteen years, I’ve proudly served this community—not just as a neighbor, but as a leader, advocate, and changemaker. My journey includes serving on the Planning Commission, the Juvenile Justice Council, the Aging Commission, and the Education Council—each role deepening my understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing our city.
I’ve also been a proud member and fundraiser for the Junior League, a committed sister of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and an active voice in advancing equity through my work with the American Association of University Women (AAUW), where I serve as Public Policy Chair and sit on the national committee.
As a small business owner, I know firsthand the grit it takes to build something from the ground up. I understand the struggles of entrepreneurs, the importance of economic development, and the need for policies that support working families and local businesses.
I’m running for City Council because I believe in the power of inclusive leadership. I’ve spent my life listening, learning, and leading—and I’m ready to bring that experience to the table. Together, we can build a city that reflects the values, voices, and visions of everyone who calls it home.
